Compassion and Health Care

By Kent Holden
I suddenly found myself in the care giver role caring for two elderly relatives. This was a world I would soon discover, I knew nothing about. My area of expertise has always been with children as I was a teacher for many years.
Being thrown into this new role, I sat down at my kitchen table with my head whirling with all the information before me and I took stock of what I did know, what my relatives would need, who would provide it and who would pay for it, and then, I set out to develop a plan. Little did I know, my plan would fall short of what I needed to do but that there would be people there to save me from it all.
Through my educational journey into the world of Health care in the United States, I continue to feel "rescued" many times. I am rescued from my state of confusion over all the services, information, and government information that I receive. My rescuees are none other than the very people who present this information to me. I am now on the other side of the teaching process. They patiently walk me through all the areas necessary for me to understand what will be needed to provide the highest quality of care for the aged people that I hold so dear. They also help me to understand who will pay for it all and what all the options are. These people that I speak of are the many wonderful, caring individuals associated with the many facets of health care. They give new meaning to the word TEAM. They have an amazing way of working together and getting the best results.
As we would go through the process of finding the best care possible, I have encountered women that have a purpose in their lives. Their lives are about helping other people through some of the most difficult times we all face in our lives. These are dedicated individuals who will work seven days a week if it will make someone else's life a little more meaningful and a little easier. These are also the same women who will do the toughest jobs because they care and they want to help people with whatever they need. I feel very blessed to have all of these individuals in my life as they have made all of our lives better by their example, their presence, and their compassion.
This is where I first began to see Compassion at it's best. I then branched out and starting looking for it in other directions and discovered it was everywhere. I can see it through the charity works that people do everyday.
I thought about compassion and how it has affected my life when I saw a picture today of a woman in India who devotes her life to helping others. I needed to only look at a picture of her to see compassion written right across her face. I saw it as I watched the paramedics care for my Grandmother when she was ill. I saw it when I watched the aide gently help her, and I saw it in the visiting nurse who came and brought her husband along to "chat" with my Grandfather as the nurse cared for my Grandmother. I saw it in the social worker who helped us make the hardest decisions we have ever had to make, and I saw it in the care coordinator who managed to keep everything together.
I looked even further and discovered that it was in the most unusual places as well. I saw it in the grocery store when my Grandfather wanted to go shopping to buy the ingredients for soup so that his beloved wife of 66 years would eat something. I saw it in my friends when they could see that the strain a care giver experiences was manifesting itself in me.
I saw it in my business partners who stood by me and supported me and uplifted me as things got worse. With all of these beautiful examples of compassion in my life, I have made the choice to exercise compassion every day with everyone I encounter and I am thankful for the woman who have touched our lives so deeply.

The Basics Of Mesothelioma Cancer

By: Ethan Miller

Are you in danger of Mesothelioma Cancer? The short answer is yes.

Asbestos is still widely used and has been used in everything from schools and work places, to appliance lining and insulation, and anywhere a fireproof barrier is needed. Most people do not understand that asbestos is still used in manufacturing many products. The air, drinking water, and even some consumer products still contain small amounts of asbestos. Asbestos fibers are even released into the air from natural deposits in the earth.

The industry feels justified in their use of asbestos because it is only dangerous after it breaks down and is released into the air. Wear and deterioration of asbestos products is the primary way to release fibers into the air.

The industry is quick to point out that people who have had a single, high-level exposure, incident, or are exposed for a short period to lower levels of asbestos, are not likely to contract Mesothelioma Cancer.

What most people do not understand is that they do not need to be in a dangerous environment. If they know someone who works in a dangerous environment, they may have been exposed through fibers that clung to clothing, was deposited in vehicles, and released into the environment through their clothing.

How to Be Tested

People at risk from exposure to asbestos from work or at home need to inform a doctor of their exposure history and symptoms. Asbestos fibers can be measured in urine, feces, mucus (fluid coming out of the body), or material rinsed out of the lungs. This may make it possible to test for asbestos long before serious symptoms occur – a vital factor in life expectancy.

A physical exam and chest x-ray may be recommended, but this is not an adequate. A chest x-ray cannot reveal fibers, just changes in the lungs. The x-ray must be sent to an experienced specialist who understands how to look for asbestos-related diseases.

The body must also be tested for fibers.

Mesothelioma cancer is rare, but the incidences of it are on the rise. Currently, it affects 2 000 Americans a year. It is caused by an inflammation in the sac-like lining around many of the body’s internal organs. The most common type of this cancer is pleural mesothelioma. This cancer in the lung’s linking causes up about 60% of all cases.

Peritoneum Mesothelioma is cancer in the lining of the abdomen and is found in 40% of all cases.

Pericardium Mesothelioma, is found in the lining of the heart and is the rarest form, accounting for a very small percentage of all cases.

Currently, exposure to asbestos fibers is the only cause of mesothelioma Mesothelioma, and other asbestos-related diseases. The problem in diagnosis is caused because asbestos remains dormant in the body from 10-50 years before scarring the tissue and causing cancer.

The optimistic news is that not all Mesothelioma is cancerous.

There are two forms: benign and malignant. Benign mesothelioma is non-cancerous and is removed and cured through surgery.

Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer. The life expectancy for patients ranges from 4-30. This quickly spreading cancer is difficult to treat. Early detection and treatment is lengthening the life expectancy of people diagnosed with this type of cancer.

This makes it vitally important for people exposed to asbestos to seek help immediately, even if there are no obvious symptoms. It may be too late to help them when symptoms appear. People who feel they may be at risk for Petritoneum, or Pericardium Mesothelioma should start medical and legal proceeding before becoming ill.

Steps To Get Rid Of Pimples

By: Juliet Cohen

Acne (Pimples) is a common problem faced by almost all teen-agers and youth. Pimples, black heads, white heads, cysts and sometimes scarring can result. Acne is a skin condition that causes spots. Most people affected by acne are aged between 12 and 25. Acne affects people of all skin colours. The processes that cause acne are exactly the same in people with black or brown skin but the impact is altered by the skin pigmentation. Acne is caused by the overactivity of the sebaceous glands that secrete oily substances onto the skin. The sebaceous glands of people with acne are especially sensitive to normal blood levels of a hormone called testosterone, found naturally in both men and women. Testosterone in people prone to acne triggers the sebaceous glands to produce an excess of sebum. At the same time, the dead skin cells lining the openings of the hair follicles are not shed properly and clog up the follicles.
These two effects combined cause a build-up of oil in the hair follicles. Over 50% of acne sufferers report people making nasty remarks or fun of them.

Pimples are actually hormonal during puberty so sometimes no matter what you put on them, they keep on popping up. Severe acne usually indicates the necessity of prescription medication to treat pimples. Oral antibiotics (tablets), such as tetracycline, can be prescribed for inflammatory acne. Isotretinoin (eg Roaccutane) is a medicine known as an oral retinoid, which also exists in a topical form (see above). Isotretinoin works by drying up oily secretions. Common over-the-counter medications for pimples are Benzoyl peroxide and/or salicylic acid. Both medications can be found in many creams and gels used to treat acne through topical application. Both medications help skin slough off easier, which helps to remove bacteria faster. Exercise regularly. Aspirin contains BHA (Beta hydroxy acid) which is a powerful defoliant and great at helping unclog pores and clear blemishes. Some form of aerobic exercise will bring oxygen to your cells and give you a healthy skin.

Natural remedies include Tea Tree Oil, lavender essential oil and witch hazel. Some home remedies for pimples have included potatoes, vinegar and lemon juice, toothpaste, garlic, lime juice and basil. Gently apply fresh limejuice on pimples and blackheads. Dab the mixture made by combining 1 tsp fresh coriander powder and a pinch of turmeric powder on the pimples, while going to bed in the night and wash it off when you wake up the next morning. Take a few fresh curry leaves and make a paste. Apply the paste on the acne-affected area and keep it overnight and wash it off with warm water the next morning. Apply the paste made of nutmeg (Jaiphal) and raw milk on acne and wash it off after 20 minutes. Do it for about 10-12 days and see the magical effects. Take some fresh fenugreek leaves and make a paste to apply on the acne pimples overnight. Apply a paste of fresh methi (fenugreek) leaves over the face every night for 10-15 minutes and washed with warm water. This will prevent pimples, blackheads, and wrinkles.

Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment and Prevention

By: Juliet Cohen

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer. It caused by previous exposure to asbestos. An exposure of as little as one or two months can result in mesothelioma 30 or 40 years later. Simian virus 40 (SV40) may act as a cofactor in the development of mesothelioma. Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. The two major types of malignant mesothelioma are pleural mesothelioma, which concerns the mesothelium membrane that surrounds the lungs, and peritoneal mesothelioma which concerns the mesothelium layer that covers the organs in the abdominal cavity. The people most at risk from being carriers of this cancer are those have worked with asbestos over the past thirty to fifty years. Because of this, the disease is most common in men between the ages of sixty and seventy as this is the group that commonly worked with asbestos during those years. Because of the lack of protection and regulations in those days, these workers were constantly exposed to the dust and fibres from the asbestos, which caused the cells of the mesothelium to become abnormal. Many building materials used in both public and domestic premises prior to the banning of asbestos may contain asbestos. Those performing renovation works or diy activities may expose themselves to asbestos dust.

Mesothelium helps protect the organs by producing a special lubricating fluid that allows organs to move around. Mesothelioma is an extremely malignant and incurable cancer that infects the membrane that surrounds most of the internal organs. Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. Affecting the mesothelial cells that make up the mesothelium – the outer lining that protects the body’s major organs such as the heart, stomach and lungs. Pleural mesothelioma represents 75% of mesothelioma cases - but it is far from the only type of this deadly cancer. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining around the stomach and intestines, and is just as dangerous and deadly. Treatment of MM using conventional therapies has not proved successful and patients have a median survival time of 6 - 12 months after presentation. The clinical behaviour of the malignancy is affected by several factors including the continuous mesothelial surface of the pleural cavity

Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. Health-care workers who specialize in part control are employing state-of-the art techniques to successfully fight pain.

2. During the initial stages of mesothelioma, pain can be relieved with over-the-counter analgesics, such as aspirin, Tylenol or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin).

3. Drug therapy is the primary method for treating mesothelioma pain.

4. Non-Opoids are pain-relieving medicines such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and NSAIDs, such as ibuprofin, which can be purchases over-the-counter and taken orally.

5. Opoids are the strongest medicines available to treat pain. Opoids, such as codeine, morphine, oxcodone, fentany, and hydromorphone, are very effective in relieving mesothelioma pain.

6. Adjuvant analgesics are medicines intended for purposes other than pain relief. A number of these are used to alleviate pain associated with mesothelioma, such as antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and steroids.

7. Emotional Support to Help Relieve Pain.As with all aspects of mesothelioma, emotional support from family or professional counseling can play a key role in pain management

8. For patients with localized disease, and who can tolerate a radical surgery, radiation is often given post-operatively as a consolidative treatment.

9. Chrysotile has been used more frequently, hence many mesotheliomas are caused by chrysotile.

10. Removal is taking place in schools and other public buildings throughout the U.S. The hope is that these measures will greatly reduce the occurrence of this cancer.
